BackupZit
Free and open source · AGPLv3

Self-hosted backup for servers, PCs, virtual machines and Microsoft 365

BackupZit backs up Windows and Linux machines, Proxmox VE, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, SQL Server, PostgreSQL and MySQL databases, NAS shares and Microsoft 365 — managed from one web console that runs on your own server, in your own network.

What BackupZit backs up

One console for every machine you run — physical, virtual and in the cloud.

Why BackupZit

Your server, your network

Every organization runs its own console. There is no cloud service, no account with us, and nothing has to be exposed to the internet.

Built against ransomware

Immutable backups (S3 Object Lock or the write-once hardened repository), detection of backups that look like ransomware or mass deletion, automatic restore tests and a tamper-evident audit log.

Efficient on any storage

Deduplication, compression and AES-256 encryption on SFTP, S3, SMB, Azure Blob Storage, USB or local disks and the hardened repository. Backup copy jobs for the 3-2-1 rule.

Easy to run

Schedules, job chains, backup windows, RPO alerts, PDF reports, email, Slack and Teams notifications, REST API, roles, LDAP/Active Directory, SSO and signed self-updates.

In your language

The console speaks 14 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Serbian, Turkish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese.

Free, with support if you want it

Open source under the AGPLv3, with no limits on machines, VMs or storage. Commercial support comes from MaxZit, the company behind BackupZit.

How it works

Running in minutes

Import the ready-made appliance — OVA for VMware, qcow2 for Proxmox/KVM, VHDX for Hyper-V — boot the appliance ISO, or install on an existing Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux server:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/Max-Zit/backupzit/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sudo sh

Then open https://<server>:8443, sign in and add agents: an MSI for Windows, deb/rpm packages for Linux. All downloads and install options.

Frequently asked questions

Is BackupZit free?

Yes. BackupZit is free and open source under the GNU AGPLv3, with no limits on machines, VMs or storage. MaxZit offers optional commercial support.

Can BackupZit back up Proxmox VE, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines?

Yes. Proxmox VE VMs and containers, VMware ESXi VMs (directly or through vCenter Server) and Hyper-V VMs are backed up agentless with changed-block tracking and can be restored as new VMs or in place. Proxmox and VMware VMs can also start directly from the backup (instant recovery).

Does it work with the free VMware ESXi license?

Yes. On hosts with the free license the API is read-only, so BackupZit takes snapshots and restores over SSH; licensed hosts and vCenter use the vSphere API.

Can I restore a whole server onto new hardware?

Yes. Boot the Windows or Linux recovery ISO, pick the backup in the console and restore the disks — drivers for different hardware are handled. A Linux system can also be restored as a new Proxmox VM (P2V).

Where are the backups stored?

On storage you choose: SFTP servers and NAS, S3-compatible storage (AWS, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, MinIO, Google Cloud Storage), SMB shares, Azure Blob Storage, rotating USB disks, local disks or the BackupZit hardened repository. Backups are deduplicated, compressed and encrypted with AES-256.

Does BackupZit protect against ransomware?

Backups can be immutable (S3 Object Lock or the write-once hardened repository). Backups that look like ransomware or mass deletion are detected and the job's retention pauses automatically, so the last clean backups stay. Automatic restore tests check that backups can really be restored.

Does BackupZit need the cloud or an internet connection?

No. Every organization runs its own console in its own network; there is no cloud service and nothing has to be exposed to the internet. Updates can also be uploaded by hand on offline consoles.

Is BackupZit an alternative to Veeam or NAKIVO?

BackupZit covers the same core jobs — agent and agentless VM backup, bare-metal recovery, immutable storage, Microsoft 365 — as a self-hosted, open-source product without per-machine licenses.
